Malins forskningsområde berör barnfamiljer som lever med svår sjukdom eller som mist en förälder/barn/
syskon. De forskningsprojekt Malin driver eller medverkar i berör alla barn på olika sätt, antingen som sjuk eller som närstående (syskon eller barn till svårt sjuk/död förälder). En stor del av forskningen handlar om att utveckla, utvärdera och implementera psykosociala stödprogram till dessa familjer eller att utveckla och/eller utvärdera och implementera andra typer av stödfunktioner (t.ex. bildstöd, syskonstöd). Stödprogrammen och övriga stödfunktioner är primärt relaterade till kommunikation om sjukdom och eget mående/situation inom familjen men också mellan barn/familj och vårdgivare. Svåra samtal inom familjen och mellan familj och vårdgivare är i centrum.
